History
The Thamen Stud was founded in 1961. It was initiated by its late owner, Koos Kruijswijk, who started breeding Welsh ponies with Cusop O´Conny (Blwch Valentino). This section B mare gave birth to a colt foal, Hertog van Thamen, which was first out of nine foals, and this dam was first out of 18 mares in 1962.
Since he lived on a farm, land was no problem in those days. The good quality of the Welsh pony resulted in section A´s and part-breds joining the club. Through the years Koos Kruijswijk bought and sold many Welsh ponies. In 1977 he bought the mare Tetcott Sulphur (sire Rhyd-Y-Felin Swgwr 2997 x dam Tetcott Saffron 11583 FS2). This dark chesnut was a fantastic performer, and she still is the base of the Thamen ponies today.
The whole family Kruijswijk is involved in some way in breeding and riding/driving the ponies. However, especially Koos´ daughter Alexandra is becoming more and more the driving force behind the stud. The mare Thamen´s Fleur keur pref (v. Twyford Pepper pref x Tetcott Sulphur) is the mother of the entire stud. Thamen's Fleur is 22 years old today, and one can look upon her excellent descendants, amongst others two sisters Thamen´s Felice and Thamen´s Zita, both ´keur´. Of course, in the meantime the latter have produced their own progeny.
The blood lines are based mostly on Twyford, with some Springbourne, Ceulan and Rowfant. In order to bring in fresh blood, the colt Gleiniant Tsar (sire Gleiniant Cossack x dam Gleiniant Sugar Puff) was bought in 2000. Tsar descends from the Revel line.
The stud is situated in the triangle Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Utrecht. Unfortunately, today land in the Netherlands is becoming more and more scarce, due to the expansion of cities. As a result, the pony population has decreased during the last few years, and the Thamen stud is now home to eleven ponies.
